Great sculpture at Goodwood

Entitled 'Breaking the Mould', the sculpture collection at Goodwood certainly lives up to it's name...  Set in the picturesque West Sussex countryside, over a hundred large scale sculptures from the finest British artists are nestled within 26 acres of woodland; an amazing backdrop for any artwork. So with sculpture map in hand we set off through the trees to explore the winding pathways and grassy openings and enjoyed a wonderful day out in search of works by Tony Cragg, Anthony Gormley and Bill Woodrow to name but a few.

Founded in 1992 by Wilfred & Jeanette Cass, the Cass Sculpture Foundation's aim is to promote British sculpture to a global audience through the commisioning and sale of large scale artworks.... and the commissioning doesn't stop at the artisits... Studio Downie architects were commisioned to design both the Visitor's Gallery and the Foundation Centre, two buildings which respond in different ways to their woodland location. The first employs large panels of glass which conceals the building within it's setting; bluring the lines between inside and outside. Where as the second uses timber fins to reflect the vertical nature of the surrounding tree trunks again blending the building into it's wooded environment. Both building's have a modesty about them that respect (and don't detract from) the sculptures that surround them.

So, inspiring architecture and exciting sculpture... every reason to go down to the woods today...
